You can use Windows 11 free and unactivated indefinitely with only minor limitations — a desktop watermark and no personalization settings. Downloading the official ISO from Microsoft costs nothing. What you can't get legitimately for free is an activated, fully-featured license. Everything else claiming "free Windows activation" is either piracy, grey-market key reselling, or a scam.
The legal free option: unactivated Windows
Microsoft allows anyone to download Windows 11 directly from its official website and install it without entering a product key. The installer simply offers an "I don't have a product key" option. An unactivated copy is fully functional for everyday use — you can browse, work, game and update normally. The limitations are cosmetic and minor:
- A small "Activate Windows" watermark in the bottom-right of the desktop
- Personalization settings (wallpaper, themes, colors) are greyed out
- Occasional activation reminders
Crucially, security updates and feature updates still arrive on unactivated systems, so this is a legitimate stopgap — not a trial that expires.
Free upgrades and licenses you might already qualify for
- Windows 10 → 11 upgrade: if you have a genuine Windows 10 license on compatible hardware, the Windows 11 upgrade is free through Windows Update.
- Students: many universities provide free or discounted Windows licenses through the Azure Dev Tools for Teaching program (formerly Imagine/DreamSpark) — check your school IT portal.
- Work/school accounts: some employers and institutions include Windows through volume licensing on devices they issue.
What to avoid
- Key generators and activators (KMS tools): piracy, frequently bundled with malware, and the activation can be revoked.
- $5 "OEM" keys on auction sites: typically sourced from MSDN subscriptions or volume agreements against their terms; these keys are routinely deactivated later.
- YouTube "free activation" tutorials: the same risks, often worse.
The common thread: if a "free" or near-free activation sounds too good to be true, it either violates Microsoft's terms or won't last.
The realistic cheap option
If unactivated Windows' watermark bothers you, a genuine retail key from a reputable seller is the safe middle ground — far below Microsoft's full retail price, but legitimate and permanent.
